Providence Towne was a founding member of the USSA in 1888. They have a diehard fan base desperately hoping to see the team win a Premier League title before they die. Fans still come out in huge numbers to the world-famous Blackstone, one of the oldest stadiums in the country. The stadium is packed into the neighborhood and fans fill the stands and the atmosphere is more party than support. Rooftop bleachers atop surrounding apartments and townhomes are home to more than a dozen unique supporter groups. All of their successes come prior to 1940. They won the USSA Championship in 1910, a US Open Cup in 1938, and stayed mostly in the Premier League until the mid 50s. However, since then they have pretty much settled into America Two. The team's logo features an anchor on a shield and in a circle basically lifted from the Providence city crest. "What Cheer?" is the motto of Providence and it was adapted by the team in the 1953 because of their long title drought. What happened that year? They were relegated out of the Premier League and they've never been back. What Cheer indeed. The team's primary kits are pretty traditional in design and always light blue from head to toe. The University of Rhode Island later adopted the color as a nod to the team. In recent years, they have had different bright change kits, with a neon orange being the latest.
